Leachate vs Wastewater: What is the Difference?
The difference between leachate and wastewater, how each forms, and how they are treated in waste and water management.
Two different liquid wastes
Leachate is the liquid that drains through stored or processed waste, picking up dissolved contaminants along the way - it is produced at landfills and waste treatment sites. Wastewater is the broader flow of used water from homes, industry and municipal systems.
Why the distinction matters
Leachate is typically highly concentrated with organic matter, salts and heavy metals, and it varies with the waste it contacts. Wastewater is more predictable but still needs staged treatment before discharge or reuse.
Treatment in waste-to-energy
In Qingfeng waste-to-energy plants, high-temperature flue gas is reused to treat leachate and wastewater, achieving zero discharge. The Changning County plant handles 100 tons/day of leachate plus 20 tons/day of leachate concentrate.
