Waste-to-Energy vs Landfill: Which Is Better?

A comparison of waste-to-energy and landfilling for municipal waste, looking at volume reduction, energy recovery and environmental impact.

Waste-to-energy facility background

The landfill problem

Landfills occupy large areas and, as waste decomposes, release methane. Many regions also face land scarcity and rising waste volumes, driving interest in treatment alternatives.

What waste-to-energy offers

Waste-to-energy reduces waste volume through controlled combustion and recovers energy as steam or heat. Qingfeng's plants integrate this with resource recovery: scrap iron is recovered from ash, and the remaining ash becomes recycled aggregates for roads and infrastructure.

When small-scale fits

Large incineration is often unsuitable for smaller populations and higher costs. Small-scale waste-to-energy is designed for counties and sparsely populated regions where waste volumes do not justify a large plant.
